About Tony Ngai:

International Background:

Tony Ngai is fluent in several languages, is Shanghainese and was born and raised in Hong Kong and Japan.  He graduated from St. Joseph's College, an international school in Yokohama and then attended Tulane University in Aeronautical/Mechanical Engineering for a year before transferring to the University of California, Berkeley to study architecture.

Professional Experience.

A builder and a licensed architect for more than 33 years, Mr. Ngai was the founder and Principal of A.K. Ngai & Associates, Hollywood, California.  He later became the Executive Vice President and Director of Computer-Aided Design, at Leidenfrost/Horwitz & Associates, a 110 person architectural firm in Los Angeles which acquired A.K. Ngai & Associates, Inc. in 1985.

In 1990, Mr. Ngai again formed his own firm, A.K. Ngai, Architect, specializing in the high end luxury residential market and commercial interiors, most notably, the Anasazi Restaurant in Desert Passages at the new Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas.  Residential projects which he has been responsible for range in estimated value to over $25,000,000; institutional and commercial projects range from $8,500,000 to approximately $50,000,000.

Residential.

Tony Ngai is an award winning architect whose classic designs are noted for their contemporary emotional space and feature huge walls of glass incorporating views of nature into the home almost as its own work of art.  He designed his first house for his own family in Yokohama when he was only 13 years old.

He has designed and built single family residences ranging in size from approximately 1800 s.f. for one of his Canyon Oak homes in the Hollywood Hills, to a custom residence of over 18,000 s.f. in Hillsborough, California.  His clients include individuals who sought Tony out to build their dream homes of every type, from ocean front residences in the Bahamas, Mediterranean villas on the Gulf Coast of Florida, contemporary Japanese influenced estates in the hills south of San Francisco and in Kahala, to luxury hilltop contemporary residences overlooking Diamond Head and the ocean in Hawaii.  Also among his clients are a Japanese builder who saw one of Mr. Ngai's homes in Kahala and then retained him to design a smaller, 4000 s.f. contemporary residence as a model home for his project in Japan.

Institutional and commercial experience including during Mr. Ngai's tenure with Leidenfrost/Horwitz:

* The Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA in collaboration with Henry Cobb of Pei, Cobb, Freed and Partners, Architects, New York.  Approximate construction cost: $50,000,000.

A Tony Ngai Home:
  • Is unique- for the site and for the client -- Mr. Ngai never designs the same house twice.
  • Creates an emotional space that one never wants to leave.
  • Is site specific and brings the view of nature into the residence.
  • Always strives to maximize the sense of interior and exterior space.
  • Uses the best quality fixtures/finishes limited only by the client's budget.
  • Brings joy to friends and family who come to visit -- and to oneself, of course.
